Grading the WCHA Uniforms: Alaska Anchorage

I will be posting a critique and grade of the hockey uniforms of the WCHA teams. Each of the 12 teams will be graded, in alphabetical order. There will be five categories, awarded points with a maximum of 10. A total out of 50 will be multiplied by two to get a total score out of 100.

Alaska Anchorage Seawolves

Alaska Anchorage gets limited coverage on the national level compared to the other WCHA teams. Yet in my opinion, they have a fantastic uniform set that deserves to be seen. The home and road jerseys feature the abstract seawolf logo as the primary crest. I'm not the biggest fan of said logo, but it's kind of neat and I find it to be a nice change of pace compared to the modern logos of today. Green helmets and breezers are worn with both jerseys.

The white homes are very sharp, green-heavy with the shoulder yoke, and classic triple striping on the sleeves and hems. I'm not completely sold on the number font, but it works.

The road green jersey matches the home white, reversing the colors. The white shoulder yoke offsets what would be a very green-heavy look on the road. The numbers work a little better on the green jersey than the white, and the overall look is solid.

The Seawolves' alternate jersey is where they lose me. It is a white jersey featuring 'Seawolves' diagonally down the front. I'm not against the concept, but I don't care for the font they chose. It is the same font as the numbers, which makes perfect sense, but I would have rather seen them go with a more retro look, using block-based numbers and letters. The jersey design is extremely basic, but somewhat unique. The color balance isn't great, far to much green compared to yellow. Unfortunately, this look is way too bland, and falls short for me.

Overall, I am a fan of Alaska Anchorage's look on the ice. The logo could use a slight upgrade but the home and road set is solid. I'd rather see something different for the alternate.

Rumors...Come True!

Last Friday, I told you about a possible new Twins alternate jersey that might be coming out. Well...I guess it is true!

Rumors...

I hear quite a bit about what might happen in the world of sports logos and uniforms. Sometimes these things end up happening, and I am fortunate to get an early look at them. Other times, they turn out to be simply speculation or rumors.

Today someone claimed the Minnesota Twins are getting a new road alternate jersey. This doesn't seem too likely, but it is possible. Of course, I wouldn't give up an opportunity to mock up a potential uniform for my favorite baseball team...



I got a chance to see the Cleveland Indians' and Washington Nationals' new uniforms long before everyone else, but this time there isn't much hard proof. By the way, I like the changes, Cleveland looks okay. I prefer they keep things more consistent, but it still looks good.



PS- keep a look out for the new MLB Batting Practice uniforms as well!

Game Day in Lincoln

There is absolutely nothing like game day in Lincoln, Nebraska. All eyes are on the Huskers. During Nebraska home football games, Memorial Stadium becomes the 3rd largest city in the state. People from across the state flock to Lincoln, and those back in their home towns are sure to watch or listen to the game. The atmosphere in Lincoln is incredible, and it is even better inside Memorial Stadium.


This season looks to be a promising one for the Cornhuskers. Sure, Suh is gone, but the defense is still strong. Hopefully the offense can come through. The Huskers hope to beat up one the Big 12 before leaving for the Big Ten. Nebraska opens today against Western Kentucky.


Oh by the way, the Huskers got new uniforms. Modified jerseys anyway. The common fan may not notice any difference, but a uniform nerd such as myself certainly does. The sleeve numbers have been moved to the shoulder, and the stripes have been adjusted slightly. The biggest difference is actually the collar. The Adidas logo is on a new red panel behind the collar, a completely new look for Nebraska. The new collar design is probably the most modern part of their uniforms.



PS- I really, really want to see the Huskers wear throwbacks again...

2010 NFL Alternates and Throwbacks

We all know the classic, traditional NFL uniforms out there. Most fans don't want teams like the Oakland Raiders, Chicago Bears or Dallas Cowboys to change uniforms. There are also the more modern designs that teams wear well. The Houston Texans and Carolina Panthers have had solid, consistent looks since their beginnings. And of course, there is everything in between.

What about alternate uniforms? Alternates are often seen as a way to break loose from tradition, or at least from the team's regular look. Many teams use throwback designs. Others have a different colored version of the regular jerseys.

Here is a look at some of this year's alternates and throwbacks:

The Arizona Cardinals unveiled a black version of their regular home and road jerseys. The pants even have matching black stripes.


It looks ok, but a bit like the Atlanta Falcons. The Falcons, meanwhile, introduced a new alternate logo.


ATL apparently sells well in Atlanta. And, from what I have heard, the Falcons' throwback jerseys from last season could be worn again this year, although there are no dates listed yet.


The Chicago Bears are wearing throwbacks this season. We will get a look back to the Bears of the 1940's. I like them...a lot.


Green Bay is also throwing-back. The Pack will wear uniforms of the 1929 club, complete with the numbers-in-a-circle.


For once, the Colts have an alternate jersey...sort of. Throwbacks to the 1955 team, as it has been...55 years. I like the blue helmets.


More throwbacks, this time for the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles will wear throwbacks from 1960. Ah yes, kelly green returns.



Enough alternates for you? Those are just the new ones for this season. Don't forget...

...and possibly a few more throwbacks. Let's not even get into possible alternate jersey/pants combinations.

Nighthawks Ready to Fly

The Omaha Nighthawks are preparing for their inaugural season in the UFL. Added as the 5th league's 5th team, the Nighthawks are hoping for a great season and strong fan support. Signing former University of Nebraska and NFL running back Ahman Green was a great first step, a move that earned quite a few followers. The team has also reportedly expressed interest in former NFL quarterbacks Jamarcus Russell and Jeff Garcia. Several other former Cornhuskers were rumored to be coming to Omaha.

Of course, the Nighthawks needed to put together an awesome logo set and some sweet uniforms. And, in my opinion, they did just that. Back in early June, I posted the team's new logo set. On July 28th, all UFL uniforms were unveiled. Omaha's set looks great, with a stealth theme to match the team's nickname.


The helmet is black, with a black facemask. The O/Nighthawk logo is on the sides, while the alternate logo is combined with a striping design on the top, down the middle of the helmet.


The home jersey is black with a simple piping design and the logo on the sleeves. The Omaha wordmark is on the chest. The road is a white version. Both are worn with black pants with the Nighthawk logo on the side.


And, for the record, I think the numbers are the coolest part. The outlines look sweet.


The Nighthawks kick off their first season September 24th (also the birthday of a certain Bmac fellow) at home against the Hartford Colonials. Hopefully Rosenblatt Stadium is ready for football!

New Oregon Ducks Football Uniforms

The Oregon Ducks football team has come out with yet another set of new football uniforms. The newest set includes a wing design on the shoulders of each jersey. The Ducks now have 4 jerseys: green, black, yellow, and two different whites. These can be paired with 3 pants: green, black, and steel (gray/silver) and 4 helmets: green, black, white, and steel. The new helmets feature an interesting design.

CWS Uniform Recap, Part Six

Number six: Arizona St. The Devils had some great uniforms this year. Twice we saw the great gray jerseys with the classic Devils script. They wore the home whites with the AS logo on the chest one game. But the most...interesting...by far were the throwbacks worn against Texas. They were maroon pullovers with all yellow caps, ,white pants, and of course, stirrups.

CWS Uniform Recap, Part Five

Now up: Arkansas. The Razorbacks lasted a few more games than people may have thought they would, yet the uniforms they wore should not have. In my opinion, these were the worst unis in Omaha this year. The home whites and alternate maroons were both worn, both with maroon caps and white pants. The jerseys feature a unique shoulder design. I hope these jerseys don't return to Omaha.

CWS Uniform Recap, Part Four

Next up: North Carolina. UNC has many different jerseys and caps to choose from, yet they only wore two different combos. Game one featured the regular home unis. White sleeveless with the Carolina script. The white caps with light blue bills were worn. For games two and three, the Heels wore their alternate light blue jerseys. These feature a newer Carolina script and were worn with the white hats. Also, UNC wore white helmets, which match the caps, for the second and third time in school history while in Omaha.

Now up: Virginia. Another team making their first trip to Omaha, the Cavs played three games. In all three games, Virginia wore their regular home uniforms. The jerseys feature a classic script. They were worn with the navy caps with orange bills. Somewhat disappointing to only see one uniform, but they looked good.

CWS Uniform Recap, Part Two

Next up: Southern Miss. USM made it's first ever trip to Omaha this year, only playing two games. In game one we saw the Eagles' regular road uniforms. They were worn with the black cap with the interlocking USM logo. For game two, USM wore their yellow alternates. They were worn with the black caps and white pants.

College World Series Uniform Recap

As the 2009 College World Series comes to a close, I will recap the uniforms that made an appearance in Omaha for each team. A picture or two for each of the eight teams will be posted.

Starting with Cal St. Fullerton. CSF had a short stay in Omaha. They went 2 and out. In game one we saw their regular home pinstripes. The navy cap was worn with it. Game two for the Titans was the navy road alternate with the Fullerton script. This was worn with the navy cap and gray pinstriped pants.
